We received this question during a recent webinar and thought it would be helpful to discuss here.
Decomposed solids contain garbage and also could harbor pathogens that are not killed by the decomposing process. This is not a hot engineering compost process with confirmation end product testing. It semi stabilized organic waste of fecal origin with trash and sanitation products interspersed. Its my opinion that this waste should be disposed of like other waste streams, at a proper disposal / treatment facility. Pit toilets are mini landfills scattered in our Wilderness. I think we need to get away from this concept and Pack Out the waste, just like park visitors are asked to Pack Out their waste when no toilet is provided.
