We received this question during a recent webinar and thought it would be helpful to discuss here.
I’ve used the one at Smith Rock State Park - the toilet looks a little different, and there is a simple sign explaining how to use it, although it’s generally pretty intuitive. Additionally, the odor is non-existent in comparison to traditional pit toilets.
The toilet is of conventional shape. There is a black belt in the toilet hole, which is a plus compared to seeing a giant pile of waste like a pit or vault toilet. The pedal is pushed by the foot to move the waste away. Urine drains by gravity and disappears. Aside from flushing with a foot pedal, there isn’t much use difference over a normal water toilet.
User experience is far superior with Urine Diversion Toilets.
Odor, Visual and Comfort.
Odor: Much less powerful as most composting toilet experiences. Side by side comparison, I’ve noticed users will stand in line to use Urine Diversion Toilets vs. composting. Primary reason: difference in odor.
Visual: For composting toilets, users can look down into the unit and see everyone’s business. For Urine Diversion toilets, users see a relatively clean conveyor belt. Users prefer getting a Clean Start.
Comfort: Simple sit-down riser. No surprise. Toilet paper goes into unit. Easy disposal with Push on Pedal. Ready for next user. No rush to Get Out of There. Pleasant no-stress experience.
